Leading an Emotionally Healthy Life

Leading an Emotionally Healthy Life

In order to live your healthiest life possible, include things that bring you peace and happiness. Use this list as inspiration to find those “ingredients” that can bring wellness to your life.

  1. Friends. Your life is more fulfilling when you have good friends to talk to and socialize with. Friends are one thing you can’t have too many of – the more the merrier!

  2. Loving family. A loving family will get you through many trying times. Recognize that you can create your own “family” by surrounding yourself with people who love you.

  3. Hobbies. Everybody requires hobbies they adore. A healthy person provides the time, space, and supplies to do what he/she loves.

  4. Regular exercise. Regular exercise promotes not just physical wellness but also emotional health. Exercise in some way each day.

  5. Learning. Adopt the mantra, “You’re never too old to learn something new.” Then, do it. Learn to garden or perhaps even take a cooking class!

  6. Knowing your neighbors. Become acquainted with your neighbors. You never know when you might need their help or when they might need yours.

  7. Bubble baths & spa days. You can relax, let your mind wander, and think about whatever you like. Make it your time that no one can take from you.

  8. Speak up. When you disagree with someone, let them know your thoughts and feelings positively. After all, you’ve got just as much right to your opinion as the other person. When you appropriately speak up, you feel better and respect yourself more.

  9. Let go. Although there are times to speak up, there are also times to let something go. Let it go if you have feelings that are less than helpful for you!

  10. Respect yourself and others. Although it can be said simply, respecting yourself can take some effort. Regard yourself as just as important as everyone else. You have a right to be respected. When you demonstrate respect toward others, you feel better about yourself and the other person.

  11. Keep promises. Be wise about making promises, and just as important, keep the promises you make.

  12. Be confident. When you believe that you can do something, you can. Believe in yourself and have confidence.

  13. Create a sanctuary. No matter who you are or where you live, you deserve a place to escape when the world gets crazy. Even if you have a large family, find one space, chair, or corner of the room to make yours. Then, make it your haven.

  14. Work. When you get excited about your work, you strengthen your emotional health. Find work you enjoy and make it an essential part of your life.

  15. Volunteer. Choose a charity or organization that resonates with you. Then, contribute to their mission and bottom line by volunteering and giving of yourself just because you want to.

  16. Adventure. Nothing renews your zest for life like adventure. Whether it’s a trip to Europe or a walk-through NYC, plan to have an adventure at least once a year. You don’t have to travel far away to have an adventure: maybe a boat trip down the river in your community would meet your need.

  17. Good nutrition. When you look better, you feel better. Eat more nutritiously. Eat more fruits and vegetables and less saturated fats and sweets. Good nutrition contributes to better emotional health.

  18. Music. With today’s access to music online, there’s no reason not to have your favorite music with you. Mix it up; have the tunes you listened to in high school, your 20s, and those you’re just hearing about. Make a playlist!

  19. Live within your means. Finances have long been a stressor for many. But you’ll be emotionally healthier if you learn to live within your means. Knowing you’ve got money in the bank will bring you joy, contentment, and financial security.

  20. Keep a journal. When you write down your feelings, you feel lighter, understand yourself better, process your challenging emotions, and are ready to let them go.

Reflection:

Include these elements in your routines to live an emotionally enriching life. Embracing these ideas and infusing your life with them will ensure you experience the emotionally healthy and prosperous life you deserve.
